Cambodia enjoys tourism growth

PHNOM PENH Cambodia’s tourist arrivals registered an increase of 8.6% in April according to the country’s statistics and tourist Information Department.
The country attracted 361,139 trips compared to 332,690 during the same month last year.
Released by the Ministry of Tourism, Monday, data showed Vietnam led the field with 89,907 visits up 14.2% from 78,751 during the same month in 2014.
Other markets in the top five were: China (54,800; +30.9%); South Korea (27,746; +8.6%); Thailand (24,397; +31.7%); and Laos (22,584; -4.2%).
In April, 50.3% (181,474) of all international visitors arrived by air. Siem Reap Airport received the major share, 28.2% (101,669). Phnom Penh Airport secured a market share of 22.1% (79,805).
inside no 2 Overland travel accounted for 46.3% (167,098) travel through checkpoints with Thailand, Laos and Vietnam while sea travel was a small 3.5% (12,567).
In addition, the data showed tourist arrivals to Siem Reap province, home of Angkor Wat, enjoyed a market share of 44.8% attracting 190,590 visits, while Phnom Penh and other destinations accounted for 40.1% welcoming 170,549 visits. Coastal areas had a market share of 13.7% with 58,334 visits while ecotourism areas accounted for a 1.4% receiving 5,844 visits.
By region, Asia-Pacific accounted for a 78.8% market share and posted an increase of 11.8% supporting 284,555 visits.
Africa recorded an increase of 62.6% with 696 visits following by Americas (+10.4%; 24,009), Oceania (+2.6%; 12,502), Middle East (-0.4%; 948), and Europe (-7.5%; 50,931).
Outbound trips by Cambodians in April reached 106,444 increasing 17.2% from 90,794 during the same month last year.
For January to April this year, the country welcomed 1,668,975 international travellers up 4.3% from 1,600,612 visits in 2014.
Outbound trips reached 353,356 growing 17.9% for the first four months of the year compared to 299,766 trips during the same period last year.
To boost the country tourism, the private sector-government working group on tourism co-chair Ho Vandy advised the country to allow visa exemption for all major source markets. Cambodia currently grants visa exemption to ASEAN citizens.`
